Magazine Guide #1: Madison

My analysis of Madison magazine for the online feature writing course.

Publication: Madison
How Often Does It Come Out: Monthly
Distribution: National
Contributors vs Staff Writers:
A fair mix. Decent chance of getting published as a freelancer.
Target Audience:
Age: I'd say 25-35
(Although it's 18-35 according to The Australian Writer's Marketplace.)
Gender: Female
Interests: Career, weight loss, relationships, beauty, celebrities, happiness, fashion
Topics and Themes:
Female role models, career change, women and technology, anti-aging, work-life balance, maintaining happy relationships, body image, issues and causes affecting women eg domestic violence and racism, women living extraordinary lifestyles.
Length of Features:
Averages about 1,800-2,000 words.
Tone and Style of Writing:
Friendly and conversational, but more authoritative than Cosmo. Most features quote experts, contain case studies and/or use statistics/reports. Now that I notice it, features also often reference topical popular culture eg one on real-life vampires refers to the Twilight series around the time True Blood was released. Hmmm.
About How Many Features:
I counted 9 features/articles written by contributors rather than staff writers.
